Questions & Answers

Q) What happens on a 1-2-1 workshop with Ross?

A) The principal aim of the day is that you develop your photographic skills in order to benefit your photography long term. However, with tuition taking place entirely on location, hopefully you will also return from the day with some great shots. Normally, the day will start with a quick cuppa and short technical brief. The rest of the day will be spent in the field, covering the aspects of photography relevant to you. Locations can be decided through discussion with Ross. Being based in the South West of England, you will benefit from a wide choice of truly stunning locations, including the rugged Cornish coastline, North Devon, Dartmoor and Exmoor. More experienced photographers may simply want Ross to guide them to the best, most photogenic locations in the area, with minimal instruction. Weather depending, the day will finish at dusk. 1-2-1 tuition is for up to nine hours of instruction – therefore, during the summer months, there may be a short break in the middle of the day.

Q) What level do I need to be?

A) Any level. Ross is experienced at teaching photographers of all abilities – from complete beginner to aspiring professional.

Q) What do I need to bring?

A) An SLR, Compact System or Bridge camera, a range of focal lengths (ideally, from wide-angle to medium telephoto), film/digital memory, tripod and whatever filters and accessories you already have. Also bring suitable clothing and footwear. Please note: if required, Ross can lend you Lee filters and a sturdy tripod during the day.

Q) What about transport?

A) Transport is provided while on location.

Q) What if the weather is bad on the day?

A) If, the day beforehand, the forecast looks wet/poor, the day can be rearranged for an alternative, mutually convenient, date.

Q) How much does the day cost?

A) For a full day (up to nine hours) the cost is £250.00. Alternatively, why not share the day (and cost) with a friend. A day’s tuition for two people is £300.00.

Q) What happens once I have booked and paid my deposit?

A) Ross will contact you directly to discuss your requirements, potential locations and to arrange a mutually convenient date.

I booked a workshop with Ross about 18 months ago when I knew virtually nothing about photography. Ross was very patient and took the time to ask me what I wanted to get out of my photography, he then spent time showing me how to use my camera and settings so that I started to understand what f/stops were and more importantly how to get off auto settings!
By the end of that day we had visited some really great locations and I was using my camera with a lot more confidence. By the end of our packed day the photography ‘bug’ had well and truly taken hold!
Ross has a relaxed, patient but very informative style of teaching. Ross certainly made sure I understood one subject before moving onto the next.
I cannot recommend Ross highly enough and would advise anyone of any level to take the plunge and book a 1-2-1 before he is to busy too fit you in!

I have had two 1-2-1 days with Ross and both were inspirational. Ross quickly put me at my ease and ensured a fun day, whilst at the same time pushing my photography to the next level.
His attention to detail is amazing and encouraged me to keep on finding ways to improve my shots, both technically and creatively. Also, Ross’s local knowledge really shone, especially when it came to finding locations suitable in the poor weather. A throughly enjoyable two days, I hope to have the chance to take another 1-2-1 with Ross before long.

Have had a fantastic couple of days with Ross. We had one day doing close up shots of damselflies, flowers and butterflies – the day was absolutely magical from start to finish. Ross was great at finding good subject matter and was then very patient and encouraging whilst I learnt the best techniques for taking shots. The other day we had was shooting landscapes and again, Ross was spot on with taking us to the best locations at the right time for the best light and tide combinations. I really can’t recommend Ross’s tuition highly enough – the days have been very enjoyable, and have helped me to get more out of my photography.

I have had a few days of 1-2-1’s with Ross – it is the highlight of my visits to Cornwall. The first one was macro and the weather and insects were very obliging – I came home with amazing close up shots due to my excellent tutor. Ross is so patient, explaining techniques, composition, care of the subject etc and going along at my pace. It was a wonderful experience.
Other days were spent on Landscapes as the weather wasn’t favourable for macro. Again Ross with his local knowledge picked superb locations and I achieved some stunning shots. The whole time Ross guided and encouraged me, giving me the confidence I needed.
Ross is a genuine, lovely man. He gives his “All” to make sure you come away with the ultimate gain from his wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm.
    A day not be missed.

I have had two 1-2-1 workshops with Ross and can honestly say I learnt more about photography in that brief time, than I had in the previous 5 years! Ross is great at sharing his expert knowledge, in a way that is easy to understand and implement. He’s also infinitely patient and his local knowledge is second to none.

Truly enjoyed myself and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the workshops, either for yourself, or as a gift. They’re suitable for complete novices, or the enthusiastic amateur! Already looking to book my 3rd visit…

I had a 1-2-1 Macro day with Ross in Somerset in 2013. Whilst the time and weather were not really conducive to what we intended to photograph, Ross made every effort to provide suitable other subjects and venues.

Ross has a friendly and relaxed approach and shows patience where required. I thoroughly enjoyed my day which was good value and would recommend it to others.

Earlier this week I completed a 2 day 1-1 workshop with Ross, where we spent 1 day on the North Cornish Coast and the other day on and around Dartmoor. Ross called me the day before we were due to meet and suggested we meet a day early due to the bad weather forecast, something which I really appreciated. Luckily, the weather conditions were great and I came away with many more images than I had initially anticipated. Ross really pushed me to work fast and efficiently in order to capture the good light we had. I came away from the 2 days feeling more confident technically and I was envious of Ross’ eye for composition, something which I one day aspire to have. I would have no hesitation in recommending a 1-1 workshop with Ross.

I had a 121 with Ross on 16 May and can only repeat what everyone else has said about their fantastic experiences with him. Ross is massively knowledgeable across a wide spectrum of photography and a natural tutor, who makes learning easy. His uncompromising attention to detail is very impressive which makes you realise how he manages to achieve such very high standards in his work. We had some challenges with thick sea mist and Ross quickly used his extensive and detailed knowledge of the region to find a suitable alternative location to shoot.
Overall the day was literally amazing an I learnt everything and more than I expected. I would recommend Ross to anyone seeking tuition.

I had 2 days of 1-2-1 with Ross last week which was a combination of close-up photography and landscapes. The weather forecast was foul, we managed to dodge around the worst of the showers get some great shots at great locations. Ross’s attention to detail in his photography and in his planning is second to none. Ross’s enthusiasm for photography is infectious and his suggestions for the way you could improve the composition of your photos is really helpful. However, he is always mindful of different types and preferences of shots and so does not dictate what sort of shot you should take. Overall he is an excellent and natural tutor.

It’s a rare combination – being both a talented photographer and a patient teacher – but Ross has both skills in abundance. I am a basic level photographer, but interested in learning more. On my 1-2-1 training day Ross was patient and yet pushed me further gently in camera and composition skill than I would have thought possible in a few hours. He’s great. And best of all he is really nice to be with. If you are thinking of booking, don’t hesitate. I have no hesitation in recommending him. You’ll have fun, and learn a lot.

    Brian June 19, 2015.

I have just spent my second 1-2-1 session with Ross – an amazing day again.
He had obviously put a huge amount of research into the day with regards to locations, tides, sunsets, lighting etc. Ross is a truly genuine professional whose intention is that you fully benefit from his expertise and knowledge which he has in abundance!
The skill sets techniques and knowledge he has passed on has enabled me to take my photography to a level I never thought I would be able to achieve.
Ross really goes out of his way to ensure that you, the client has a day you will never forget and ultimately come away well informed and with some stunning shots.
Look forward to another day in the future.
    Thanks Ross.
    Brian.

What a brilliant day I had with Ross. His knowledge of Cornwall and its best viewpoints were invaluable as we chased the best light on a mainly dull day. His photographic and Lightroom knowledge and experience are quite excellent. However what was best was Ross himself – so flexible in the way he constructed the day to suit what I wanted out of it and his relaxed, modest and friendly personality. Would I recommend Ross?? Well I’m certainly going to book him again and that says even more than any words I could write.

I had a 1-2-1 day with Ross for my 40th birthday present and it was amazing. Ross was very friendly, very patient and very helpful. Easy to talk to and a mind of information and experience. He made me feel at ease immediately which is important when you are going off to meet a stranger. Nothing was too much trouble and he made the day fun as well as full of easy to understand learning. I learnt so much on the day more than I expected and Ross made it enjoyable which makes learning easier and fun. I would highly recommend Ross to anyone and I will be booking another 1-2-1 day in the near future. Thanks so much Ross, I had a memorable day for my birthday present.
