1-2-1 tuition: Close-up Photography

From £325.00

Do you wish to hone your skills as a close-up photographer? If so, why not spend a day with me on location, learning more about creative use of depth-of-field, sharpness and focusing, field-craft, natural and LED lighting, the importance of background choice and more. Whatever your level of experience – complete beginner or semi-professional – the day will be tailored to your individual requirements and expertise. I am one of the UK’s leading close-up photographers and the author of Digital Macro & Close-up Photography. My close-up images have earned me recognition in Wildlife Photographer of the Year, The British Wildlife Photography Awards, and International Garden Photographer of the Year. I have been taking close-ups since childhood – over 25-years – and have obtained a wealth of knowledge. I am a highly experienced tutor, co-running Dawn 2 Dusk Photography, and leading workshops for the Nikon School, Tatra Photography, The RPS and The Royal Horticultural Society… it is safe to say that I know my stuff! My style of communicating is relaxed, friendly and enthusiastic. I look forward to meeting you...

  • What happens on a 1-2-1 workshop with Ross?

The principal aim of the day is that you develop your photographic skills in order to benefit your photography long term. However, with tuition taking place entirely on location, hopefully you will also return from the day with some great shots. Normally, the day will start with a quick cuppa and short technical briefing. The rest of the day will be spent in the field, covering the aspects of photography relevant to you. Locations can be decided through discussion with Ross. Being based in the South West of England, you will benefit from a wide choice of truly stunning locations, including the rugged Cornish coastline, North Devon, Dartmoor and Exmoor. More experienced photographers may simply want Ross to guide them to the best, most photogenic locations in the area, with minimal instruction. Weather depending, the day will finish at dusk. 1-2-1 tuition is for up to eight hours of instruction – therefore, during the summer months, there may be a short break in the middle of the day.

  • What level do I need to be?

Any level. Ross is experienced at teaching photographers of all abilities – from complete beginner to aspiring professionals.

  • How much does the day cost?

For a full day (minimum of 8-hours tuition) the cost is £325.00. Alternatively, why not share the day (and expense) with a friend or two? A day’s tuition for two people is £375.00, while tuition for three is £425.00.

  • What do I need to bring?

An SLR, Compact System or Bridge camera, a range of focal lengths (ideally, from wide-angle to medium telephoto), film/digital memory, tripod and whatever filters and accessories you already have. Also bring suitable clothing and footwear. Please note: if required, Ross can lend you Lee filters and a sturdy tripod during the day.

  • What if the weather is bad on the day?

If, a day or two beforehand, the forecast looks wet/poor, the day can be rearranged for an alternative, mutually convenient, date.

  • What happens once I have booked and paid my deposit?

Ross will contact you directly to discuss your requirements, potential locations, subject choice, and to arrange a mutually convenient date.

  • For my 50th Birthday my wife kindly purchased a 1-2-1 workshop with Ross. The first day we focused on close-up and macro photography, using field craft to photograph dragonflies, and butterflies. By the end of a terrific day, I had captured some lovely images. The second day we photographed the North Cornish - another fantastic day. Thanks to Ross for running a most enjoyable workshop - for his skill, knowledge and patience and going the extra mile to make sure I came away with some fantastic images. I would have no hesitation in recommending Ross for any workshop.

  • Have had a fantastic couple of days with Ross. We had one day doing close up shots of damselflies, flowers and butterflies – the day was absolutely magical from start to finish. Ross was great at finding good subject matter and was then very patient and encouraging whilst I learnt the best techniques for taking shots. The other day we had was shooting landscapes and again, Ross was spot on with taking us to the best locations at the right time for the best light and tide combinations. I really can’t recommend Ross’s tuition highly enough – the days have been very enjoyable, and have helped me to get more out of my photography.

  • I had two days of 1-2-1 tuition with Ross last week, which was a combination of close-up photography and landscapes. The weather forecast was foul, we managed to dodge around the worst of the showers get some great shots at great locations. Ross’s attention to detail in his photography and in his planning is second to none. Ross’s enthusiasm for photography is infectious and his suggestions for the way you could improve the composition of your photos is really helpful. However, he is always mindful of different types and preferences of shots and so does not dictate what sort of shot you should take. Overall he is an excellent and natural tutor.

  • I was first introduced to Ross through his beautifully written books. I was a complete novice to the world of digital SLR photography and once I had grasped a basic use of my camera I decided to seek tuition from a professional. Initially I felt somewhat daunted approaching someone with Ross’s experience and expertise but I am so pleased I contacted him.

Ross is so approachable, kind and modest that I was put at ease immediately. My first 1🔢1 was ‘close up’ photography, a subject completely new to me, but by the end of that day I had learned sufficient new techniques to take home some shots of damselflies and butterflies that were in excellent focus.

We have also spent three separate days on 1🔢1 landscape photography on the beautiful Cornish coast.  The locations Ross chose on each day are stunning and he knows the area so well he can chose exactly the right place to visit for sunrise and sunset on that day as well as pointing out exact spots on other locations en route that would be great at other times of the year.

My days out with Ross are some of the best times I have had and I always book my next day as soon as possible when one is over.
